Year 2
Welcome to Year Two
Mrs Laden, Miss Solomon, Miss Gregory & Mrs Scott
There is an exciting year ahead for your child in Year 2. From discovering the history of the UK, to embarking on a career with Captain James Cook travelling around the world, comparing our country to Africa, to working and learning about habitats within the school grounds and beyond.
The children in Year 2 will be experiencing an exciting and stimulating curriculum. Our ultimate aim is to develop the historians, artists, scientists, geographers, writers, mathematicians and designers in our school and inspire them to become life long learners.

What's Happening in Year 2

Year 2 Homework
What's Happening in Year 2
This term Year 2 will be learning about The Great Fire of London. Children will be studying the History of the fire and how it spread, looking at key individuals such as Thomas Farynor and the role they played in helping us find out the key information we discuss today. We will reflect on changes made after the fire and how they impact on safety in the modern world.
In Science the children will be learning about Habitats. We will be looking at different types of habitats, including Micro-habitats and how animals are suited to their living environment. Children will explore living and non-living and never alive and the criteria for each category.
During art lessons the children will be studying Marianne Mitchell as an artist and exploring her techniques to create their own pieces of abstract art, creating their very own art gallery. Children will also be designing, creating and evaluating their own 1666 style house - which may unfortunately be caught up in our very own Great Fire of Hemlington!
Year 2 Homework
Children in Year 2 are trying really hard to see how far around the world they can travel by reading as many books as possible!
Please remember that children must read at home a minimum of 3 times per week. We change the children's reading books every day. It really does make a difference to their understanding across the curriculum! It is really important to discuss the book with your child to develop their comprehension skills. There are some questions below to help you.
- Find a few words/phrases/sentences that tell you about .... (character, setting, atmosphere)
- What do other people say about the character?
- How did...? What happened to...?
- What happened after...?
- What did... do, after...did...?
- Which word tells you about how big/small ...?
- Is it true/false...?
- What does (a particular word) mean?
- Draw a timeline of events.
- Find tow/three facts/reasons for...
Our Class Read
This term Year 2 are reading... 'The Giraffe, The Pelly & Me' by Roald Dahl
It would be fantastic if you could ask your child about the story and what they have learnt from reading the book so far.
The children will be discussing the book and the vocabulary used by the author. This term we will be focussing on helping the children develop skills to dig deeper into a text and identify the words they are unsure of. We will share and discuss the text together.
Children will have opportunities to read 1:1 with staff in school at least twice a week. We will be spending a lot of time developing children's fluency skills to speed up their reading.
Spellings
Spellings go out weekly on a Friday and are to be tested the following Friday. Please get your child to practise writing them down as well as spelling them out loud. They need to see the pattern to help them learn the spelling. To understand the meaning of the words it is good practice to write them into sentences to understand them in context.
Each week spellings will focus on either a spelling pattern, or may be a selection of key words that children must be required to spell confidently and read on sight.

Settling in to Year 2
We would like to share with you how well the children have transitioned into Year 2. They have showed excellent maturity and are already showing us they are increasingly able to cope with the demands of the Year 2 curriculum. We are sure the children are going to flourish throughout and will have a brilliant year!
