What's Happening in Year 3/4
Welcome back for Autumn 2!
We had such a busy start to the autumn term! These are some of the things that we got up to!
- The Y3 children completed pedestrian training with Middlesbrough Council.
- We all built shelters with Chris Hardman.
- We attended a talk with the author, Lauren Child.
- Gail from Warburton's came into school and we all made a healthy sandwich, while learning about why it is important to have a balanced diet.
In the second half of the autumn term and into the first term of spring, our topic is Tremors. In Geography, the children will be learning what causes earthquakes and volcanoes, they will look at the structure of the Earth and learn about the impacts that earthquakes and volcanoes can have on different communities. Our English work will also link to our topic. We will be reading and creating our own volcanic themed poetry and reading the book Escape from Pompeii. We will continue to use Times Table Rock Stars in class, so keep practising at home. Make sure you help your child practice as much as you can at home!
In maths, we will be looking at addition and subtraction before moving on to multiplication and division.
Year 3/4 Homework
Children have three sets of homework each week to help develop their basic skills:
Reading - Children should read for 5-10 minutes every day, and their reading record should be brought into school at least three times a week to be checked and so books can be changed.
Spellings - Children are usually given their spellings to practise at home each Thursday, and we teach children how to understand rules rather than simply to remember a list of words. Children might practise by: writing the root word and then rewriting the word with the rule applied; look, cover, write and check; write the word in a sentence; being tested by a parent, friend or other family member.
Times Tables - Children will be challenged to increase their speed and accuracy using the Times Tables Rock Stars website in preparation for their Times Tables Assessment towards the end of the year. Look out for further details to follow!
